Getting Rid of Mold Growth on Your Window Casings

When you see mold growth in your home, you’ll probably think about killing it with a proper chemical cleaner. However, if you had a recent window replacement, it should be cleaned carefully if you want to keep the warranty intact. This is because certain surfaces can be sensitive to chemical cleaners and can even be damaged if you’re not careful.

Checking for Mold on Your Windows

Mold will usually start growing around the bottom at the joint between the glass and window sash frame. While mold is colored and won’t be hard to miss, it can sometimes be the same color as the window casings so you won’t immediately notice it unless you clean your windows regularly.

Eliminating and Preventing Mold Growth

Regular maintenance is still the best way to keep your window installation clean and free of mold. Some methods and products may void your window’s warranty, so be sure to follow these cleaning tips:

  • Before you start, always wear safety goggles, gloves, and a dust mask to ensure you don’t ingest the spores that the mold can release into the air. Also, cover the floor under the window you’re cleaning to catch any falling mold.
  • When cleaning the glass, use a soft, dry cloth to remove excess dust and grime. Afterward, apply a mild cleaning solution and wipe the surface clean in a circular motion. Your cleaning solution can be diluted vinegar, liquid window cleaner, or dishwashing liquid diluted with water.
  • Never use paper towels to clean the glass. Newspapers and abrasive products aren’t recommended as well, as they can scratch the glass surface. Solvents and harsh chemical cleaners are also not recommended on glass, panels, sash, frame, and other window components.
