How Do You Know You’re Getting Good-Quality Windows?

When it comes to replacement windows, good quality is a matter of detail. It’s incredibly important to compare windows of different models or styles to determine the best windows for your home. To get you started, Direct Windows recommends checking these features and answering the following questions.

  • Appearance: Does the style of the windows complement the design of your interior and exterior? Do the grids that divide the glass panes fit firmly? Is the hardware appealing? Unless you’re trying to match the color or design of existing windows, consider selecting a low-maintenance material so you won’t have to scrape or touch up the paint.
  • Operation: Do the windows you’re thinking of installing open and close smoothly? Are the cranks and locks solidly built and can they withstand frequent use? Can the screens be easily removed and attached? If cleaning is a priority, can the interior and exterior panes be easily reached?
  • Warranties: Compare the warranties for parts and finishes. One of the most common problems with window replacement units is failure of the seal between double-pane glass, so it’ll be extremely beneficial to have a warranty that covers glass replacement up to 20 years.
  • Service: Are window components available should something break? Can you replace the weatherstripping when it wears out without much hassle? Also, consider how difficult and costly the replacement will be should condensation form within the glass.
  • Glass Selection: Windows with energy-efficient features such as double glazing and low-E coating are the standard now. Most manufacturers offer two variations of glass: one designed for cold climates and one designed for sunlight control in warmer climates. If your residence tends to spend more for air conditioning, select the warm-climate type. If you spend more for heating, go with the cold-climate type.
